A paradox in the way universities pursue Sustainability is that they are structured to deliver reductionist knowledge through disciplines whereas the concept requires a holistic systems epistemology to deeply integrate Sustainability's economic, social, environmental, and cultural dimensions.

The aim of the forum is to further examine arguments for why universities need to put a systems’ epistemology at their core and to canvass the required structural reforms to ensure the warp and weft of disciplinary and systems thinking always occur in unison.

University of Tasmania, Hobart, Tasmania, Monday 14 & Thursday 17 October, 4.00-5.30 AEDT

It's 2050, and you're living in a warmer world. Your team must adapt to protect your town from fire, flood and heatwaves. Can you learn to survive and thrive?

The Heat Is On is an interactive role-playing game, played in small teams. You will be transported forward in time to 2050, to a climate 1.5 degrees warmer than pre-industrial temperatures. Your team play the role of a local council in an island called Adaptania. To protect your town and the surrounding area from climate impacts including floods, bushfires, and heatwaves, you must make decisions about how to adapt. The game helps you to learn about climate change and adaptation. It enables you to envision climate changed futures in which communities can thrive, and to learn how to make collective decisions to prepare for diverse and overlapping climate impacts. The game was co-designed by climate scientists, game researchers and young people in 2023.
